Sixteen years ago, Gene and Thomasina DeGeorge built their dream home. Comfortably remote on seven acres, the DeGeorges loved that their house was in the country. "A horse farm is adjacent to our property," Thomasina DeGeorge says. "That's what enticed me to live here." She loves listening to the horses from her porch.

Of those seven acres, the DeGeorges sold two and gave their daughter one — so she could build her own house. With three acres left, they're still plenty private.

"I designed the whole (house) myself," she says. Her aesthetic is centered in 19th-century style. Country artifacts of that history are present everywhere. Many of her antiques come from shows and shops in the area. A bar and a china cabinet were custom-made through Kugler's Red Barn in Schenectady. Another country store, in Kinderhook, is where DeGeorge found vintage bonnets and aprons. The wood of the walls and the ceiling evokes the feeling of an old country barn.

"I'm just drawn to that era in time," she says. "I love the old country look."
